A music blog trying to make great music (both new & old) known to a larger audience, by posting daily tracks and news. All this from the perspective of a Dutch biology student. Enjoy.
Due to lack of new discoveries, time and inspiration I wasn't very active as of late.
This has got my juices flowing though. Saw a show from this guy on London Calling, Amsterdam almostt 2 years ago. This confirms what I've been suspecting. D.D Dumbo is a guy to keep your eye on.
A genre I fell in love with during my time on high school. And.. this is one of the best approaches to it. For fans of: Pete and the Pirates, yes, a name out of the archives! This record is released soon and will be one the indie-releases to watch in April and definitely a band that could get some attention coming festival season.
From one seemingly depressed genre into another: Lo-Fi. Just kidding of course. Jackson Scott's Sunshine Redux is one of the more interesting releases of the week. Another crazy ride that goes from relaxation to utter intensity, showing show many different points of view on the genre that it is hard to pinpoint a certain track. Still the track that does it all, backed up by a certain groovy guitar-line is "Dissonance".
Oh by the way, the new Best Coast LP Californaia Nights is great and new Disclosure material sounds like shit.
Think Animal Collective, but with the typical Belgium Lo-Fi-ish Folk in between the crazy parts. Hints of School is Cool are in there as well. That's for me what BRNS is. It is an exotic sound, I can honestly say I believe these guys are pioneers in what they do. They are filling their own corner of the music world. The whole album is an adventure, really. One of the best of the year perhaps? (I say that a lot I know, but I'll get to that in January.)
Looking for some more complicated but still poppy songs? Do you like some trumpet, sax and horn to give you hints about classical pop music? But do you still want to have the idea that your listening to a alternative album, that gets more interesting everytime you press play? This next collaboration might be the thing for you.
St. Vincent, since her album Actor widely seen as a really impressive singer and songwriter, and David Byrne, the songwriter of 70's band Talking Heads, have let their inspiration collide, to come up with a new flavour of art-rock, indie-pop and folk. This has led to some very impressive songs, an example:
Noticed the typical Annie Erin Clark (St. Vincent) guitar-play mixed with lyrics by a master in songwriting, David Byrne. Those two factors are absolutely beautifully kept together by the horn-section (Contribution by Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and The Dap Kings, too name a few.).
No, nothing yet? Well, give it a few spins.
Or try this one:
Let's hope this leads more from both of these artists, cause the inspiration seems to be present in surplus. Anyway the album's called Love This Giant and is probably an interesting option, if looking for something to delve into, especially considering this album can be sweet for a broad audience.
A Yeasayer album is an adventure, an adventure to look out for. At least so it seems after the release of the band's third album Fragrant World. You have people who have already known about Yeasayer for quite some time now, (good for you!) and you have folks that might hear from them for the first time because of this album(this will be the larger group). I can guarantee that new listeners after they have listened to Fragrant World for the first few times, are going to think: What the hell is going on here? And I can't blame you, there is just a lot going on, on this album, and I really mean a lot.
For the people who already liked Yeasayer, the trick to a great listening experience for a lot of people is to not think of "the band that made the track 2080", but to open up again. Because they have sure changed. The songs feel more adventurous and synthesizers are on full duty. About those synthesizers, the dancy riffs they produce almost feel like modern-day dance tunes, then again, they feel completely different. And that's the thing with a lot of the songs, at first you only hear the catchyness of it, and then the rest of the song starts to hit. Especially so in the case of Demon Road and Henrietta, which is a song that actually has scientific meaning, look that up yourselfs people.
About the performance of the band, they seem even more divers than they already were, the singing has improved, and most of the songs are even more hypnotising than tracks from the other albums.
Example:
I can't wait to hear the remixes people will produce from these tracks. Absolutely one of the more exciting albums of 2012.
As of late, the 80's sound has been dominating on my mp3-player, mainly because I have only recently really discovered Joy Division(not like I didn't know them, but I started to dig different songs and I discovered, to my opinion, the real Joy Division), but also acts as Toy, Warpaint and The Horrors are often on repeat. They all have a way of being melancholic without being depressing, but actually being quite uplifting.
And now we have the relatively new act 2:54, which has toured with Warpaint(not a bad starting point), that has really surprised me. Based around sisters Hannah and Colette Thurlow, the London band can be one of 'the' new acts this year. A bit like The XX a while ago, a band to which they also have been compared(just with more guitar power)
Check it out. This is their latest single: Scarlet, and one of the album: Creeping
