The beauty of this performance was that its beauty was unexpected. RY X's music has been raging across the Indie-scene lately and without doubt it showed some great promise. But I honestly did not see this coming.
The music is best described as a slow, but very tense (due to his voice mainly) kind of Folk, in which song composition and raw emotion are key. From second one Ry took the (in the beginning a small one) crowd on a journey, the atmosphere was just right and you could clearly notice the effect it was having on both the crowd and band (great support by the way). To the point that the band and crowd have reached some sort of harmonic mutual understanding which is only reached at the most special of shows. That is exactly what a performance on a festival like this should do. Jaw-dropping delivery of his key tracks Howlin' and Wanderlust, actually every track hit the spot from that point on and before you could say: "wow, this is pretty good", the tent stage was packed.
Every longer intro and outro was spot on, and played with exactly the right intensity. Goosebumps were spread across everybody who was there to witness an artist actually discovering how much people appreciate their music and perhaps even discovering themselves. Definitely an artist that is thinking out of the box and wants to make some more than honest and believable music. He might be able to do just that. Definitely one of my main highlights.
Here is a promo video for the festival, with RY X performing Berling.
Enjoy!
Best Kept Secret, 2nd year in a row, great line-up (low on Hiphop though and there were some unfortunate last-minute cancellations) and it proved to be a great weekend. Next few days, I will share some (personal) highlights and some bands I think we should keep track of in the next few years.
First one is a band I've seen three times now: Circa Waves, and more and more the audience is following the lead of the band and is energetically dancing/pitting/jumping on their hit-single 2 minute tracks. Because yes, I think they have much more hit-potential than simply Get Away. Seeing them the first time over half a year ago, the difference in stage performance is huge. Perhaps they were somewhat sloppy or messy the first time around, now a experienced band was playing on stage, enjoying themselves and knowing their songs in and out.
Some relatively unknown bands try to charm the crowd with an hour or 45 minutes of show, showing everything they can do, while Circa Waves showed, that if you can blow away the audience in half an hour while stacking up one catchy song after the other, that is probably a better idea. Another one of these albums and they will not be playing on a tent stage in the afternoon for much longer.

Circa Waves - Young Chasers
As if lately, there wasn't enough 60s and 70s revival going on anyway, new neo-psych band Temples has decided to add a little more to the mix, with maybe the most typical london sound of the whole festival. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound like any band you've heard before, it just has the class from the early psychedelic bands. Although there is not much known about the band so far, and the first album has jet to drop, the frontman was a definite presence on stage, and the only track that has been released so far, has hit like a bomb. Wacth out, this one´s dangerously catchy.
With high expectations present before the performance, they definetely delivered. See for yourself: Temples Live @ London Calling

It looked like it was going to be a rainy edition of Bergpop this year, but luckily for us the weather was nice, which made for a great setting to check out some promising acts. First one that stood out for me was Wooden Constructions, for which the festival's program stated it looked a lot like Joy Division. For me that is a reason to be sceptical, as I have never been to a gig, that really had a Joy Division feel to it. But as I saw mixed reactions amongst the crowd, I can say for myself that I have never seen a band that reminds me of Joy Division as much, as Wooden Constructions did yesterday night. The singer showing off some Ian Curtis moves did the trick as well. On top of this, and I have never heard anyone else mention this, some songs by the band, had a taste of Vampire Weekend, imagine those two together?
See for yourself, (They were on De Wereld Draait Door, a dutch TV-show.)
The festival's final act was Capeman, which had a more straightforward rock'n'roll sound, which triggered an (surprisingly) intense reaction amongst the crowd. This makes you wonder why they have been cruising in the background. Surely I will be on the lookout fo more from these guys, because while there were some technical problems the first few songs, they delivered a very solid performance.
Here a song they played yesterday:
Yeah they were a 3FM serious talent.
Finally I want to mention Mineral Beings, I heard some great comments on the performance in the Wageningen library, close to bergpop, earlier this year, and they were back now, so it was definitely worth checking out. Think The Knife, Austra and maybe even hints of Lykke Li. Listen to a track by them here:
