A music blog trying to make great music (both new & old) known to a larger audience, by posting daily tracks and news. All this from the perspective of a Dutch biology student. Enjoy.
One artist i'm definitely excited about is Mac DeMarco. This canadian, which stands out from the crowd of regular singer-songwriters, with his own style. A style which might cause some frowning. His loose, but funky guitar work together with his laid-back voice, makes for some sweet songs. Songs by a funnyman (just 22 years old), that somehow also have a retro feel about them. The songs make me think about Beck, Mikal Cronin and Atlas Sound even, but then in a blend of some sort. Sometimes dark, sometimes happy. Here's a taste.
By the way, he only recently adopted the artist name of Mac DeMarco, beforehand he released music under the alias of Makeout Video, so check that out as well.
Looking for some more complicated but still poppy songs? Do you like some trumpet, sax and horn to give you hints about classical pop music? But do you still want to have the idea that your listening to a alternative album, that gets more interesting everytime you press play? This next collaboration might be the thing for you.
St. Vincent, since her album Actor widely seen as a really impressive singer and songwriter, and David Byrne, the songwriter of 70's band Talking Heads, have let their inspiration collide, to come up with a new flavour of art-rock, indie-pop and folk. This has led to some very impressive songs, an example:
Noticed the typical Annie Erin Clark (St. Vincent) guitar-play mixed with lyrics by a master in songwriting, David Byrne. Those two factors are absolutely beautifully kept together by the horn-section (Contribution by Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and The Dap Kings, too name a few.).
No, nothing yet? Well, give it a few spins.
Or try this one:
Let's hope this leads more from both of these artists, cause the inspiration seems to be present in surplus. Anyway the album's called Love This Giant and is probably an interesting option, if looking for something to delve into, especially considering this album can be sweet for a broad audience.
