A music blog trying to make great music (both new & old) known to a larger audience, by posting daily tracks and news. All this from the perspective of a Dutch biology student. Enjoy.
Due to lack of new discoveries, time and inspiration I wasn't very active as of late.
This has got my juices flowing though. Saw a show from this guy on London Calling, Amsterdam almostt 2 years ago. This confirms what I've been suspecting. D.D Dumbo is a guy to keep your eye on.
Discovered this band today and I must say, this is amazing. It's a lightfooted, rock 'n roll track that is definitely growing on me. Love the backline-bass and the dream-poppy vocals. It's a rock 'n roll theme in disguise.
A genre I fell in love with during my time on high school. And.. this is one of the best approaches to it. For fans of: Pete and the Pirates, yes, a name out of the archives! This record is released soon and will be one the indie-releases to watch in April and definitely a band that could get some attention coming festival season.
11. Miccoli - Home 12. Holly Ann - Dead Alive 13. NZCA Lines - Two Hearts 14. Seapony - Where We Go 15. Follow Me Not - At The Moon 16.Prawn - Slopes 17. Gabrielle Papillon - With Our Trouble 18. Family Trees - No One Will Ever Know 19. Giant Peach - Deserted 20. Marching Church - Coming Down
Best song from the album. period. It's a good second by the way, but it does not meet up to its expectations. (Especially, since the first one is legendary in my eyes/ears).
It was a while when I posted a dreamy track. So here is one. Discovered this today, scanning through Youtube channels. This is from Hardly Art Records.
I particularly love the acoustic guitar, which has disappeared from dreampop recently. And the vocals are just right, nothing forced, just a natural vibe of dreaminess.
My favourites of last month. A month full of returns, beautiful lyrics and most of all emotional music.
Newcomers (for me at least) : The Dandelion, Julien Baker and Fossa are probably what I will remember this month by, still it is packed with songs that I will play into next year.
Majical Cloudz, Savages, Poliça & Tweaks (previously Pin Tweaks) have confirmed their place in my soul. "If it ever goes wrong, I'll write you into all of my songs." Doesn't get more sad and beautiful at the same time. Typical Cloudz. One thing is for sure, I have had worse lists on here.
Another one act that is up for abig year in 2016. It just doesn't get more typical, when it comes to American indie right now, but if this doesn't cheer you up, I don't know what will...
Anyway this happy pop-punk duo deliver energetic tracks and people are catching on now. Always need a few acts like this on every festival. Just to lighten the mood and to give an opportunity for relativation.
Wolf Alice was on Dutch national television a few days ago and gave a good show in Amsterdam as well. Still my relationship with the band is a peculiar one. Some tracks I really like, but when I saw them live a long while ago, they didn't impress me. The performance never stayed at a strong level, one track did it for me, the next one not so much. Perhaps it is just a band that is still discovering their own talent and sound, or we (me) are not yet accustomed to their variety. The evolution of a listener.
Lately images of shows have made me reconsider.
Despite my doubts, this might turn out to be a modern classic.
For now, I like their gritty sound the most.
Perhaps a band can be too versatile?
At least for a second record, they can go in a lot of directions. It is something to look out for.
Wild Nothing is an artist I sometimes can't stop raving about. I feel lucky I was able to witness Jack Tatum and his guys deliver magic live. This new record coming out February 2016 seems to be another milestone for the band. Having further developed their sound and the next video is proof of that. Both tracks are great and can probably withstand the test time with some of their material. Love the renewed guitar-sound that is dominating the background of the tracks.
This video is one of the first, not just moving artwork, live album covers. And slow-motion settings between man and woman, just fit the music of Wild Nothing perfectly. Dream away people, dream away.
Just wanted to tell you guys about this amazing channel on Youtube. Their slogan says it all. A beautiful selection of tracks with homemade videos, mostly consisting of old (& relatively unknown movies) or footage. The results are melancholic and heartwarming.
An example & one of my new favorites:
A nice collection of videos to start delving into some new music with some nice videos to support them. It captures the mood of the music perfectly.
Us, indie-lovers and alternative freaks, we like to claim a band, especially when you are the first one (in your social network) to discover a band. I am no exception. I am a proud of my long lasting relationship with Tame Impala, which I have on many occasions claimed to be the best band in the world. Five minutes later I said something else, but still...
That's why I started to give life to a new type of post on this blog, top 10s based on themes, bands, flavors and so on.
And what better way to do it, with the band, that finally emerged to a greater audience. And get the creds they rightfully deserve. All thanks to the recently released Currents, which was actually received with mixed opinions.
But what many people are unfamiliar with is their rich and unique heritage from previous years. Still dazzles me I forgot about 'Endors Toi'.
Without me even noticing it, Earth Mk. II is undebatably my favourite dutch garage/noise/new wave (that corner) band. And they have been releasing new material bit by bit for the last few weeks.
Check out their other videos as well, cause they include a compilation of hip girls wearing Nirvana shirts and an image of everyone's favourite Simpson's character while the lyrics go: Nobody really cares about you. Pretty hysterical if you ask me.
But the video with the most basic, yet psychedelic, background (maybe it's the future cover), holds the best track. What i'm actually saying is.... the material is getting to me... again.
It took a while, but everything remotely similar to Joy Division is to my liking. This is no exception. It is not remote from Joy Division either. Still, this band took a complete turn from their previous material, so be sure to check that out as well. This band is complete! Great track from a great record anyhows.
Another issue of the things I've noticed on the web that are worth telling.
1. Finally, with capital F. Two artists and their collab, have been the gossip for years now, ever since they both ran in to some success. And now, ladies and gentlemen it is Finally happening. Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds are releasing their combined works on a full-length double-album. Title: Collaborative Works (obviously...) It will hold all their recently made material, EPs and seven new tracks. So prepare for all their crazy remixes and more new material formed into a record. This is going to leave a crater!
here's a quick taste of some previous work.
2. I would not post something here if I did not honestly believe in it. There is an emerging hype around a band, that is rightfully emerging. The band is New Venusians. It has some soul, it has a big-band vibe, alternative RnB-like lyrics, some Dreamy, synth-pop parts. It's an adventure into a new corner of the music world. For me, and probably for a lot of people. Think of FKA Twigs in a band, Hiatus Kaiyote with an indie catchyness i cannot fully grasp yet.
Of course, this is from Australia. Again, check how many people live there, and compare that to how many good Australian music you know, it's crazy, really.
Let's hope their material is constantly of this level.
This has been doing particularly well on my channel, without any promotion yet. The soulful dreamy tracks on this record come in plenty and this is a highlight. Combine that sound with a raw voice, of someone who is not sure about the topic of conversation either, the track becomes an intriguing 5minutes. As so often in modern-day Indie music, melancholy to growing up, or just life in general plays an important part. Yet, so beautifully done and put into a guitar track, because that is what it comes down to, is very rare. YAST is a band I had never heard about before yesterday, but one I will not soon forget. Apparently they played Grasnapolsky festival near me, not long ago. Would've loved to be a witness to that.
